The company calculates and compensates the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions generated in connection with the hotel laundry. We compensate these textile-related climate gases by supporting our selected compensation project in Uganda. The project in Uganda supports smallholders in reforesting and better managing existing forests and is certified according to the Plan Vivo standard. The CO₂ is permanently bound in the growing trees and plants.

Sustainability is a top priority at the ELLINGTON HOTEL. The main success factor for a good sustainability strategy is the commitment and motivation of the employees. In order to achieve our sustainability goals, we use the collective creativity of all our employees and enthusiastically develop new projects to maximize our energy efficiency and optimize the respectful use of all our resources. Together we set achievable goals and together we implement them.

What are we doing?

• We wash with modern ECO washing machines, which have an automatic load control. Electronic sensors detect how much laundry the machine is loaded with and automatically adjust the required amount of water.
• With the introduction of our “Greencard – no Service Card” in the rooms, we encourage our guests to reuse their towels and sheets instead of changing them daily. The Greencard was used about 6,000 times in 2019.
• We have climate-neutral and sustainable cosmetic products in our rooms and use climate-neutral cleaning products
• We have our own herb bed and 6 beehives on our roof and have so far extracted 200 kg of honey, which our guests can enjoy at the breakfast buffet and purchase at our reception
• We have two of our own E-gas stations on our hotel parking lot
• We obtain our fruit and vegetables from regional farmers
• We are converting to LED and green electricity
• We are digitalizing our work processes step by step with the aim of working completely paper-free in the future
• We pay attention to sustainable materials and the conservation of resources in our consumer goods

The 92 criteria of the audit catalogue were developed on the basis of internationally recognised frameworks for sustainability such as ISO 14001 (EMAS/environmental management), ISO 26000 (Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)) and the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC) for the hotel industry.

They comprise seven core areas for sustainable business: “Management and Communication”, “Environment (Energy, Water and Waste)”, “Purchasing”, “Regionality and Mobility”, “Quality Management and Sustainable Development”, “Social Responsibility” and “Economic Responsibility”.

BERLIN ACCOMMODATION TAX

Since 01.01.2014, the city of Berlin imposes a tax on overnight stays to the amount of 5% of the accommodation price (excluding value-added tax and fees for other services such as the mini-bar etc. As the accommodation tax is an “indirect tax”, it is included in the guest’s bill and paid by the accommodation provider to the city.

Business travellers are exempted from the accommodation tax but they must prove that their trip is for business purposes.

In order to make your stay as pleasant as possible, we request that you:

1. Register your dog when booking (EUR 5.00 plus city tax).
2. Keep it on a lead in public areas.
3. Tell the reception and hang a ‘Do not disturb’ sign on the door when leaving your dog alone in your room.
